When you talk about the basic stitches it doesn't get much more basic than the Chain Stitch. A chain is the first thing you make when crocheting just about any project. It's the stitch you work your first row into, it's how you gain the height to begin a new row, the are used to make granny squares and lace project.
In this tutorial I will tell you how to make a slip stitch, the knot you make to get the yarn on your hook, and the chain stitch. I don't currently have pictures of how to make a slip knot but I will take some, maybe even make a short video, and I will add it on here.
The first thing you want to do when starting a crochet project is to make a slip knot. Now everyone has their own way to make a slip knot so if you have another way to make one that you like better feel free to make it that way. Here is how I make mine:
Holding the end of your yarn in your left hand, fold the working yarn, yarn connected to the ball, over your pointer finger.
Loop the yarn around your pointer finger.
Pinch the over laying section of yarn and pull the working yarn from the back to the front of the Loop.
Using your hook pull the working yarn through the loop and pull tight.
Sorry this is hard to take a picture of since you need both hands to do it.
Pull working yarn to make loop tight on the hook.
You have just made a slip knot!
Now to make a chain stitch.
Going from back to front, wrap your working yarn around your hook.
Pull the yarn you just wrapped around your hook through the loop.
You have made one chain.
To make more chains just repeat the steps you took to make the first one. Wrap your yarn around your hook from front to back pull the yarn through the loop on your hook.
